LOSS OF SEXUAL DESIRE

This symptom can be a result of a large number of factors including vaginal dryness, thinning of vaginal tissue, loss of interest in sex, difficulties in your partner relationship, and loss of sensation. Hormone changes are clearly not the only cause.

Sexual desire has several components including drive, motivation, beliefs, values and expectations. The fate of libido depends on genetic makeup, early childhood upbringing, one’s values and beliefs about sex, sexual experiences over time, self-esteem, self-care, and physical makeup. Now you can see how complex sexual issues can be.

Sexual problems involve not only the reproductive organs, but also the entire body.
  • Age-related changes
  • Health concerns (Ex., post-mastectomy or hysterectomy)
  • Incontinence
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Medications (antidepressants and antihypertensives can reduce desire and orgasmic capacity)
  • Diminished androgen levels
  • Functionality of brain, cardiovascular system, nervous system
An interesting study has shown that midlife women’s sexual drive may shift from being the first step in the response cycle. The famous researchers, Masters and Johnson, developed a linear response cycle model in 1966.
  • Desire leads to arousal
  • Then to orgasm and resolution
Recently, a response cycle model based on women’s experience suggests that desire comes after arousal. Women may begin at a point of sexual neutrality with arousal emerging from a conscious decision and/or seduction or suggestion from a partner.
